Kesälomereissu 2011 Part 3 / Summer Vacation trip 2011 Part 3

English below

---------------------------------------------------

The trip was all in all very fine and worth of going. Someday we are going back and hopefully then we can see also Guard museum and hopefully we can see the Raate road in winter also.

We didn't buy any reindeer meat. We thought that of course there is somewhere reindeer meat for sale but we didn't find it :/ I was also a little bit disapointed in one of the local handicraft shop. I tried to find something for my father for his birthdaypresent but the selection was pitiful. At least we found for ourselves pretty forged candlestick. I would also liked there to be more selection in Raatteen Portti's cafe more than doughnuts and buns. Like something from Viena Karelia because we were there or at least very near. I would also liked there to be somekind of a restaurant where I could have eaten local delicates. It might we saw one next to the handicraft shop but we didn't have enough strenght left to investigate it better what they would offer (at least I got a peek and saw very delicious cakes and other delicates there :P). Somehow it seems to be very hard here in Finland to find for example a restaurant where they would serve just ordinary finnish traditional dishes. You can find any other countries side by side or then there's hamburger places or ABC service stations. But if I would like to eat something Finnish I have to really be looking and most of the times I should already know those places. At Hossa there would have been this Domnan Pirtti (Domna's Cottage) where I understood could get Finnish food. But if I understood right you get food service only when you order it beforehand. Hossa was quite far from Suomussalmi so we didn't get to visit there.

Does other countries have the same problem that it's hard to find your own food culture in your own country? My image is very different what I have read, seen and heard. For example I think in France you can have French food almost everywhere. Okey, it's true the French food culture is much finer and more multitidimensional and different provinces has their own. In Finland we don't really have anything really revolutionary fine food culture, like if we are comparing to the France. We have sautéed reindeer (poronkäristys), Karelian hot pot (Karjalanpaisti) and Karelian pasty (Karjalanpiirakka), swede purée (lanttulaatikko), Baltic herring roll (silakkarulla) and many other fish dishes etc. Very simple, simple flavours, but very delicious. I believe those foreigner visitors would really like to taste something Finnish when they are here. And I would really enjoy a small comfy place with warm atmosphere with homely and warm food.

There again would be a very good business idea :) Someday if I'm going to establish my own restaurant it would be like Grandma Duck's/Moominmamma's kitchen. Delicious, simple homemade food, traditional finnish dishes with old recipes in cosy restaurant with friendly and good service. The stock would be from as close as possible and organic. Berries, mushrooms, apples etc. from my own yard/forest picked by myself and on autumn I would pickle myself or made juice. Seasonal delicates in the growth time so only few customers could enjoy these. But that would be the catch.

Hi, thanks for following my blog!

Your question wasn't offensive at all. Yes we use our chickens/turkeys/ducks for meat for us and the dogs. :) We do all of the processing ourselves so that we knows it's being done humanely.

Don't give up on your dream. I had to scale back on mine because of my husband's injury/job loss, but someday we'll get back into it more fully again. It's a lot of fun and hard work, but totally worth it. You'll love it when you have your own farm someday. :)

Stay positive and you'll definitely be able to get into a workout routine. I've never in my life stuck with a workout program for more than a week or two, so I was so excited that I completed the six weeks. I got off track for a couple of weeks, but I'm determined to get back to it. Starting off with the walking is a great idea and you'll be amazed at how much better it will make you feel. :)

Hi Lilli! I didn't get a chance to write a comment on your last post. But thanks for showing all the monuments you saw on your trip. I didn't know there were Russian and Ukrainian monuments there. It was very interesting to see the pictures, thanks for sharing them.

how interesting that it's difficult to find traditional Finnish food in Finland! Well, if you came to my native country of Taiwan, you would not have that problem – ha ha! In Taiwan, it is food heaven and you can find traditional Taiwanese food easily – plus also Italian, French, Spanish, British, Indian, Japanese… Etc etc etc – anything you want to eat!! :-) I think if I lived in Taiwan full-time, I would be obese!
