Yö tuli nukuttua oikein hyvin. Aamulla Isäntä meni sytyttämään nuotiota grillipaikalle jotta saataisiin aamiaista. Grillipaikat olisivat kyllä voineet olla parempia. Oli hyvin hankalaa sytyttää kosteita puita ilman paperia, katosta kun grillipaikoilla ei ollut, tai oikeastaan ei ollut edes kunnon nuotiopaikkaakaan. Isäntä onneksi silti sai sytytettyä meille nuotio ja pystyimme tekemään aamiaista. Toki olisimme voineet käyttää mökin uuniakin jos Isäntä ei olisi saanut tulta aikaiseksi, mutta paljon mukavampaahan se on kesälomalla tehdä ruoka elävän tulen ääressä :)

Nuotioaamiaisen syönnin jälkeen lähdimmekin sitten kohti Raatteentietä jonka takia Suomussalmelle tulimmekin.

Olihan se hieno. Heti Kuhmontien alussa, josta matka periaatteessa alkoi, oli Talvisodan muistomerkki. Matkan varrella pysähdyimme aina vain kun silmämme osui johonkin kylttiin joka johtaisi muistomerkille tms. Raatteen Portti ja Talvisota monumentti oli kyllä huikea näky. Tai ei Raatteen portti nyt kovin ihmeellinen ollut, olin odottanut jotain hienompaa. Mutta monumentti oli kyllä vaikuttava! Ja oli kyllä todella lumoavaa vain istua monumentin keskellä ja kuunnella kellojen kilinää. Sää muuten suosi meitä. Aurinko paistoi oikein lämpimästi kirkkaalta taivaalta. Isäntä sai upeita kuvia otettua. Raatteen Portilla oli Talvisota näyttelykin mutta se oli aika pieni. Olimme odottaneet taas jotain hieman hienompaa. Mutta ihan mielenkiintoinen oli kuitenkin.

Siitä sitten jatkoimme luonnollisesti itse Raatteentielle. Pieni hiekkatie. Se tunne sitä ajaessa oli kyllä aika outo. Olisimme halunneet kävellä tien päästä päähän mutta kilometrejä olisi tullut sen verran ettei olisi pystytty varusteiden puutteen takia. Ehkä vielä tullaan takaisin ja silloin voisi varmaan kävelläkin :)

Jälleen pysähdyimme kaikkeen mahdolliseen. Löytyi venäläisten muistomerkki ja joukkohauta, joka oli kyllä merkitty hyvin huonosti. Jonkinlainen polku jatkui ja jatkui mutta emme tiedä olisiko joukkohauta ollut siellä jossain polun päässä vai oliko se sitten siinä kyltin kohdalla. Jonkinlaista parempaa opastusta olisi kaivattu. Ukrainalaistenkin muistomerkki löydettiin.

Entisöity puolustuslinja oli kyllä kaikkein parasta antia. Löysimme senkin kyllä aikalailla sattumalta. Olisimme todellakin toivoneet parempaa ohjeistusta tienvarsille. Mutta oli se kyllä upea! Siellä kulkiessa teki mieli leikkiä :) Voin vain kuvitella lähiympäristössä asuvien lasten iloa. En voi uskoa etteikö pojat ainakin olisi siellä käynyt leikkimässä sotaleikkejään. Minä ainakin olisin. Nytkin olisi tehnyt mieli hieman leikkiä :D Mutta uskomattomissa oloissa Suomen miehet ovat kyllä joutuneet olemaan. Kävimme entisöidyssä korsussa ja se oli jo nyt erittäin epämiellyttävä paikka. Korsu oli kylmä ja erittäin kostea. Niskaan tippui vettä ja pimeää oli. En meinannut uskaltaa peremmälle kun pelkäsin lattian pettävän alta. Haju oli myös kostean ja kylmän mukainen. Mietityttää vain millaista siellä olisi ollut sitten talvella jos kesälläkin oli epämiellyttävää. Pitäisi siis joskus mennä takaisin talvisaikaan.

Siitä ei ollutkaan enää pitkä matka rajalle. Venäjää käytiin moikkaamassa (tai oikeastaan Venäjä oli rajapuomistakin vielä 3-4km päässä. Mutta ei siis kovin kaukana). Vartiomuseo ei ollut enää auki mikä harmitti.

Takaisin tultaessa Raatteentieltä näimme vihdoin porojakin! Vaadin ja vasa käyskentelivät jonkun talon pihalla. Oli pakko tietenkin pysäyttää auto ja napsia muutamia kuvia. Pällistelivät että mitäs ne ihmiset nyt aikovat ja päättivätkin sitten siitä lähteä. Toivon mukaan ei nyt kovasti häiritty.

Käytiin sitten Suomussalmen keskustassa. Kiantajärven rannalla oli TODELLA tuulista. Ihan kuin olisi ollut merellä. Puuttui vain suolan ja kalan tuoksu. Hieno järvi sekin on, maisemat olivat hienoja. Morjestettiin Ilmari Kiannon patsastakin.

Siinä se päivä sitten mukavasti hurahtikin ja mentiin takaisin leirintäalueelle, levättiin, käytiin kävelyllä ja tehtiin ruokaa. Harmi kun sauna ei ollut enää auki. Olin mökkivihosta lukenut miten muut ihmiset kehuivat todella kovasti pientä saunaa. Joten koska ei ollut saunaa niin emme myöskään käyneet pulahtamassa joessa jonka vieressä sauna olikin. Jalat käytiin kastelemassa ja todettiin että oli todella kylmää vettä!

Seuraavana päivänä sitten kotiin. Olisimme halunneet käydä matkan varrella olevassa Lottamuseossa mutta olivat senkin pistäneet jo kiinni :( Kotimatkalla myös satoi. Aikalailla koko matkan. Mutta onneksi oltiin kotimatkalla joten ei kauheasti haitannut :)

Tässä "hieman" kuvia. Minulla olisi videokin puolustuslinjasta mutta kun ensin se pitäisi muuttaa toiseen muotoon ja kääntää enkä oikein vielä osaa tehdä kumpaakaan joten lisään sen sitten jossain vaiheessa kun saan aikaiseksi.

Vesi oli kylmää / The water was freezing

We slept very well. At morning my partner went to light the fire to the barbecue place so we could make breakfast. Those barbecue places could have been better. It was very hard to light up moist woods without any paper, there weren't roof in any of those barbecue places, actually there weren't even proper place where to put the fire. Luckily my partner got the fire up so we could make our breakfast. Of course we could have make it in the oven in our cabin if he wouldn't manage, but it's more nice to make everything with the real fire when in summer vacation :)

After breakfast we headed our way to the Raate road, that's why we were at Suomussalmi in the first place.

It was terrific. As soon as we get to beginning of the Kuhmo road, where the whole trip basically started, were Winter War memorial. On our way we stopped in any sign we could saw that point to some memorial etc. Raatteen Portti (The Gate of the Raate) and The Winter War monument were amazing sight. Well actually the Raatteen Portti wasn't so amazing, I had waited something greater. But the monument was impressive! And it was so fascinating just sit in the middle of it and listen to the bells tinkle. The weather by the way was nice to us. The sun was shining very warmly from the cloudless sky. My partner got some fantastic pictures. At the Raatteen Portti there were also Winter War display but it was quite small. I had again waited something greater. But it was interesting.

From the Raatteen Portti we headed our way to the actual Raate road. It was a small sand road. The sensation driving the road was very strange. We would have liked to walk the road from the beginning until the very end but there were so many kilometers so we couldn't do it without proper equipments. Maybe someday we will go back and then we might walk :)

Again we stopped in every sign we could see. We found the Russians memorial and mass grave which was marked very badly. There were some kind of a path which just continued and continued but we don't know if the real mass grave would have been in the end of that path or right there where the sign was. We would have liked there to be more information. We also found Ukrainians memorial. 

Restored defence line was the best thing. Although we found it almost with coincidence. We would really liked there to be better information by the roads. But it was magnificent! When we wandered there I would have liked to start playing :) I could just imagine the joy of the neighborhood kids. I wouldn't be amazed if boys came there to play their war games. I would have. And I would have liked to play even then :D But I can't believe in what conditions those men of Finland have to be in Winter War. We went to the restored dugout and it was very unpleasant place. It was cold and very moist. I had water tipping in my neck and it was very dark. I had to force myself in the dugout because I was afraid the floor would give in. The smell was also the typical smell which you smell in moist and cold places. I came to think what kind there would be in winter if it was so upleasant in summer already. We should someday went back in winter.

From the defence line there wasn't much longer we came to the border. We went to say hello to fellow Russia (actually Russia was yet about 3-4km from the border crossing place. So not very far). It was shame the guard museum which were there wasn't open anymore.

When we came back from the Raate road we finally saw some reindeer! There were reindeer doe and a fawn sauntering in someones yard. We just had to pull over and take some pictures. They goggeld us for awhile speculating and decided to go away. I hope we didn't disturb them much.

Then we went to the center of Suomussalmi. It was very windy at the bank of Kianta lake. It was like we would have been by the sea. There just weren't the smell of salt and fish. It was fine lake, the views were amazing. We also said hi to the statue of Ilmari Kianto.

And so the day came to an end and we went back to our camping area, rested little bit, went for a walk and made dinner. It was shame the sauna wasn't open. I read from the cabin journal how others have been praising that little sauna very much. And because we didn't have sauna we also didn't went swimming in the river beside the sauna. We did went to tip our toes and we found out the water was very cold!

On the next day we headed our way to home. We would have liked to see Lotta museum in out way home but it was already closed :( It also rained almost the whole time. But luckily it rained in our way home so it didn't bother us much :)

Above there's "few" pictures. I would also have a video from the restored defence line but firts I need to put it in another format and rotate it and I don't know how I do those yet so I add it here some other time when I get something done.
